Funded by the Celts around 5,000 BC as Borbetomagus, Worms is recognized as the oldest town in Germany.

Worms is also one of the major sites where the events of the ancient German Nibelungenlied took place. A multimedia Nibelungen Museum was opened in 2001, and a yearly Nibelungen Festival right in front of the Dom, the Cathedral of Worms, attempts to recapture the atmosphere of the piece.

Today the city in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate is an industrial centre in the north of the Rhine Neckar Area. Next major towns are Mannheim and Frankfurt. Further background information can be found in the Wikipedia article about Worms.
